Cosmology and Aesthetics of the Javanese Dance

This paper will explore the cosmology of Javanese dance and will focus on analysing Yogyanese dance from the court city of Yogyakarta. By expanding the meaning of the word taya (dance) and mataya (to dance) into another level of meaning, this paper will examine the relationship of the dance performer as microcosmos, with the Supreme Being, the macrocosmos. The unification of microcosmos (human being) and macrocosmos (Supreme Being) is known in Java as the concept of 'Manunggaling kaivala-Gusti
