Abstract

Typical Javanese ornaments were constantly used both in temples and mosques as a result of syncretic Islam in Indonesia. The ornaments are derived from a combination of elements from mystic animism, Hindu-Buddhism, and an Islam that differs from orthodox Islam in the Near East and Arab world. Hee Sook Lee-Niinioja writes about her research.
